Prophets of the unknown God

June 21, 2006

So often I forget why it is I do what I do. For that matter I often lose site of our reason for being the church. Thankfully there are people around who continue to raise the banner. Erwin McManus, lead pastor of Mosaic Church in East Los Angles spoke to some church leaders at a recent conference. He was teaching about speaking truth in a relevant manner using Acts 17 as his focus text. Check out the quote.

"The church isn't here for us. We are the church and we are here for the world. We need to become prophets of the unknown God. We must be the ones who say, 'We have seen the invisible, we have experienced the unimaginable and we are here to tell you that what you do not know can be known.' . . . God is the unknown God, but He is not the unknowable God."

We can't loose sight of why the church exists. We have a story to tell so let's unashamedly shout it from the mountain tops (or at least the nearest bump in the road). What's your story about God's glory? Take a moment to comment about how God has become known to you.

Kinda off subject, but I loved your sermon this week. I used to think I was pretty well educated in my faith. But after such a long time, I think that knowledge gets erroded by the world.
It was nice to hear more about why we believe what we believe.

To circle back, it’s much easier to be the church when you know why we are doing it. Doubts like, was the DaVinci code real, or any of the other attacks on christianity that constantly bombard us from every angle of culture.

I knew in my head that it wasn’t true, but my heard started questioning everything.

Anyway…just wanted to say loved this past week.

How has God become known to me? In many ways. Starting with being a part of a church that teaches His Word and is an active example of how to live out His message of love for one another. Seeing the changes over the past five years in myself, my husband, and my kids. Seeing God work through the times that were not always easy, and that when those times come again I can always count on His promise to see us through them. Being able to share Gods love with others and knowing how He will find a way to touch them at the right time. God became known to me even more while on my recent trip to visit family in Alaska. From the peace and calm He gave me in leaving my family for nine days, to the assurance He gave me on the flights to and from (this was the first time I had ever flown and I was a little nervous). On a daily basis I was reminded of His beauty through the mountains, ocean and seeing how He works in nature. The time I spent with my brother and his family was a blessing from God. If I could have gotten to the top of one of those mountains I would be shouting that God is patient, healing, calming, peaceful, amazing, loving, and an awesome creator.
God is known to me and I can’t imagine life not knowing Him.

There are too many to list in a comment box. The most prominent for me would have to be through adoption. There are many sides of adoption that I have gotten to know my Heavenly Father much deeper. It is through my own self being adopted that God has become known to me more and more each day. Threaded throughout life at various moments in time, I have allowed satan to make me think that I am rejected, unwanted, unloved and not worthy of God’s love. Time and time again, God has said, “No, Lori, I love you and you are mine”. These verses remind me of that over and over. “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.” Isaiah 49:15&16 (NIV)
